This next idea has no practical purpose but as a novelty gift it could make somebody millions if it can be made in an affordable manner. However, my initial research leads me to believe this is quite complex to make (or else I would have made it and made millions instead of giving this idea away for free).

The idea would be to make a small little device that takes sunlight and air and makes little carbon pellets or carbon dust. Basically, just get the carbon (C) out of the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air. So it is a little device you can put on your desk or on the window and can watch it extract carbon from the air.

Who would want these worthless gadgets? I think they would make great novelty gifts especially with all this talk about global warming, Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits etc. You can give it to your environmentalist friends so they can use it as a conversation piece to talk about global warming or perhaps just enjoy watching the device save the planet one step at a time. You can also give it to your Rush Limbaugh buddies so they can watch it and make fun of it while it saves the planet one carbon poop at a time.

Of course you can just buy your friends a plant instead but it isn't much fun watching plants take CO2 out of the atmosphere.
